Dr. Steven T. Summerfelt, Professional Engineer, Director of Aquaculture Systems Research, The Conservation Fund’s Freshwater Institute (TCFFI), Shepherdstown, West Virginia. TCFFI employee since 1992. Project Leader on TCFFI’s USDA-ARS project titled, “Development of Sustainable Land-based Aquaculture Production Systems”. Research focus on water treatment unit processes (e.g., fluidized-sand biofilters, microscreen filtration, aeration, air-stripping, oxygenation, ozonation, ultraviolet irradiation, and waste management systems) and on optimization of fish production (e.g., engineering of fish culture tanks, continuous production modeling and management, ultrasonic waste-feed control, and fish health management). Worked on the design of several large private and public fish-farms and with state and federal agencies on the evaluation and design of hatchery water supply, production system, and effluent treatment systems. Publications: Author or co-author of 50 peer-reviewed journal publications, nine book chapters, and a book titled Recirculating Aquaculture Systems.
