By comparison, the trout held by Senior Research Associate John Davidson (at left) is "only" 12 pounds.

However, most of our efforts are to grow fish to “market size”—and this 23-pound trout is much bigger than that! The market size for rainbow trout varies but generally runs around one pound. Here at Freshwater, we grow rainbow trout to about 3 pounds, which takes about a year.

Other facts:

  • Rainbow trout typically only grow to about a pound in the wild, depending on the state and location where they are caught.
