Fifty percent (50%)

fish farming tanks

Currently, fish farms supply 50% of seafood consumed across the globe. That amount is likely to increase with our current rate of consumption and as we continue to over-harvest our oceans.

According to the USDA, the United States is the largest market for seafood in the world. Over 40% (estimates are as high as 80%) of our seafood is imported. In fact, as far as natural products go, seafood is our second largest trade deficit - only petroleum beats it.

The Freshwater Institute promotes sustainable, environmentally-friendly aquaculture, or fish farming, practices. We research aquaculture technology to reuse and purify water and to grow high numbers of healthy fish in the most efficient and environmentally-friendly way.
