Drs. Christopher Good and Steven Summerfelt recently attended Aquaculture Europe 2009 in Trondhiem, Norway, on August 15-17.
They presented research findings from the USDA ARS funded project titled “Development of Sustainable Land-based Aquaculture Production Systems”. Steven Summerfelt gave two presentations, titled: “Water quality and treatment process efficiencies in replicated recirculating systems operated with and without ozonation” and “Process requirements for achieving full-flow disinfection using ozonation and uv irradiation”.
Christopher Good also gave two presentations titled, “Health and performance of rainbow trout oncorhynchus mykiss in low-exchange water recirculating aquaculture systems with high or low dissolved carbon dioxide” and “The effects of ozonation on water quality and the health and performance of rainbow trout oncorhynchus mykiss in low-exchange water recirculating aquaculture systems”.
Approximately 80 people attended each presentation and the presentations appeared to be well received. This research has improved our understanding of the inter-relations between production system design, loading, and water quality, and allowed us to identify and ameliorate substances that accumulate within RAS and affect fish health and quality.
